Bilingual interaction and identity
One aspect of my research focuses on codeswitching and language alternation in Japanese and English, and my doctoral dissertation is on the accomplishment of identity in bilingual talk. The study combines ethnography of interaction with applied conversation analysis and membership categorization analysis.
Interacting in a second language
I am currently also interested in how novice speakers of English interact (with each other, and with expert speakers). Here I use Conversation Analysis to look at how novices achieve intersubjectivity given a limited range of interactional resources.
Study skills and academic English
I'm also part of a group that is researching ways for learners of English to foster better study skills in their second language.
